Costly meetings

How many times have you muttered to yourself, “this is a waste of time”, “get to the point”, “why was I invited to this meeting anyway?”

Meetings are an effective communication and management tool, yet they are costly when you assess the number of people attending your meeting x their hourly salary x hours spent in the meeting.

Today’s 24-hour customers, unlimited to-do lists and increased multi-tasking efforts affect our overall attention span. A meeting that is succinct and well managed establishes rapport and enhances the facilitator’s credibility.

Below are a few tips

  • When people are having a meeting within a meeting, it could be a sign that the facilitator is losing his/her leadership position.

  • Establish the agenda and meeting rules BEFORE you start the meeting. (Rule examples: close cellular phones, active participation, note taking, start-end time, roles and responsibilities, etc.)
